Goodyear Launches New Ultra Grip WTD Winter Drive Tyre for Ski Tour Coach Operators
Featuring a brand new and patented block interlocking system concept, Goodyear?s Ultra Grip WTD winter drive tyre offers better snow, wet and ice traction than its predecessor, the G443. Of particular interest to UK coach companies operating ski tours to the Alps, the Ultra Grip WTD complements the Ultra Grip WTS winter steer tyre which was launched last October and Goodyear considers the two to be the benchmarks in winter tyres.
Among the significant features the Ultra Grip WTD (Winter Traction Drive) offers is the tread pattern. This is the first tyre to incorporate a new patented design called 3D-BIS Technology (Block Interlocking System) featuring trapezoidal shaped blades. These, combined with a high void ratio and blade density, give an improvement of 10% to traction in snow, 5% related to wet and ice traction, improved wear pattern and better damage resistance. This is in comparison with its predecessor the Goodyear G443. The 3D-BIS Technology blades are fine sipes with three-dimensional wave-like shapes and are best described as looking like waffles. The unique shape of these blades causes the tread blocks to lock together when the tyre deforms, creating a more rigid and stable footprint which in turn gives many of the benefits mentioned. This concept has been patented by Goodyear. A new logo, symbolising mountains and a snowflake, further identifies the tyre?s winter-optimised features.
In addition, the optimized decoupled blocks and high tear-resistant tread compound add to the wet traction and grip performance as well as giving an even wear profile and extended mileage. Further benefits include reduced stone damage and cut resistance. The tread pattern also has optimized groove width and shape which give outstanding stone retention prevention. It also has open shoulders which enhance snow and mud traction as well as side grip. The construction incorporates the latest technology giving optimum durability and retreadability.
The Nordic markets, particularly the timber industry, and bus and coach operators operating in alpine regions are the largest users of winter tyres, typically fitting new tyres before the winter weather starts and keeping them on the vehicle for the rest of the year. In the UK, coach operators travelling to the alpine ski resorts are an important market for these tyres. The WTD will be available from TruckForce and other tyre dealers.
Goodyear?s Ultra Grip WTS (Winter Traction Steer) range of steer axle tyres for trucks and coaches offers 25% better winter traction and a 20% improvement in mileage, compared with its nearest competitor, and is claimed to be the best on the winter steer-tyre market. It is available in the same sizes as the WTS with the addition of a 385/65R22.5. Although designed as a steer tyre, the WTS can be used on any position if required. The WTS replaced the Goodyear G250.
The mileage improvement the WTS offers are due to the latest compound technology and an improved footprint that has been achieved through the adoption of a specially adapted belt package. In addition to improvements in life and traction, the tyre?s characteristics include even wear profile, good steering ability, wet skid resistance and stone rejection. The wet traction improvement, compared both to the nearest competitor and previous generation Goodyear tyre, is 6% which is achieved through the new compound and optimized groove amplitudes.
The optimized groove amplitudes coupled with staggered ?Z? blades in the tread help to improve snow braking and traction by up to 25% and the tyres can be studded if required for further grip.
